Stuttering that is inherent from childhood is normally due to a small abnormality in the language center of the brain which can be genetic in orgin. It can also be caused by an injury to this part of the brain or may be the result of severe psychological or emotional trauma.

There are many techniques that can be used to overcome or stop stuttering. These techniques include:

1. Speak Slowly

Stuttering can be the result of simply speaking too fast. Slowing down can prevent falling over your words, stammering or struggling to get a word out. Take a deep breath, relax your shoulders and neck and think about what you are about to say before you say it.

2. Envision The Words

Stutterers normally struggle with certain consonants, vowels or words. Picturing the letter or word in your mind uses a different part of the brain and can therefore bypass the language center allowing a word to be spoken clearly and without stuttering.

3. Sing Song

Singing also uses a different part of the brain and words that are sung can often make a stutter disappear completely. Speaking in a sing song voice or singing words that are difficult to say can help overcome a stutter. practicing this technique on a regular basis can even cure a stutter permanently.

4. Talk To Yourself

Stress, anxiety and nervousness, especially in social situations or where you are expected to speak in front of a crowd can aggravate a stutter. Speaking to yourself however relieves all this stress and anxiety and the words are more likely to flow easier. Practicing this in front of a mirror can help build confidence that is essential to stop stuttering.

Stuttering may not seem like a serious problem but it can be very debilitating and prevent a person from realizing their full potential or even interacting with others under normal social circumstances.
